POETRY TIME BLOG #5

March 21, 2014

Hello all.

It's Children's Poems galore this week.

I'm doing a children's poetry version of March Madness at Ed DeCaria's Think Kid Think! blog. What happens is you're given a word and you have to incorporate that word into whatever poem you write.  My word was host.

My poem, which is called FOREIGN EXCHANGE, is "competing" against another poem from a lovely writer named Miranda Paul.

Please check it out.

Also, 3 children's poems of mine appear in THE POETRY FRIDAY ANTHOLOGY FOR SCIENCE edited by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong.  The poems names are FOUNDATION (DON'T RUSH IT!), FROGGY, and MOLD.

You can find more about the book here:

Just for the heck of it, I'll post one of my poems from the anthology to whet your appetite.

FOUNDATION (DON’T RUSH IT!)

Where to begin?

These pieces are all chunked together.

Directions read like a pile of hieroglyphics.

I cross my arms and stew.

Grandpa walks by. "What's wrong?" he asks.

"I don't know where to begin." I reply.

"A good rule of thumb is to start at the bottom,

Have a good base. That's called a foundation."

He reads the directions slowly as

We begin to slot pieces together on the wooden floor.

"Being patient is key—remember,

Once you rush it, you crush it."

This building starts rising like helium,

Turning into the skyscraper of my dreams.

In closing, I'll end with another children's poem of mine.  I went jet skiing for the 1st time back in 2003 along the Corpus Christi Bay in Texas. To say I had the time of my life would be an understatement. Doing my daily scribbles this week I thought about that memory while working on my 15 Words or Less exercise at Laura Purdie Salas' blog. http://www.laurasalas.com/blog/poetry-prompts/ant-farm-15wol/

So I leave you with this children's poem and am looking forward to corresponding with you all again next week!

JET SKIS

Ocean’s ceiling receives

Electric massage,

Leaving fizzy contrails

In its wake.
